Over the course of our 36-plus year history, The Jackson Group has been able to survey employees and patients of healthcare organizations around the country. It’s important for organizations to survey these groups and learn how their employment or experiences are being perceived, and to see where there are areas for improvement.
However, it’s important to realize that there are relationships between the scores you receive from your employees on workplace engagement/satisfaction and the scores you receive from patients on their overall experience at your facility. Through research on the data we have collected over the years, we can identify certain aspects of employee satisfaction that – when scored positively – have a greater effect on the likelihood of a patient scoring their experience higher on instruments like H-CAHPS (the required, nationwide publicly-reported patient satisfaction survey process).
For example, our research shows that organizations where employees are able to “take action” on things that need addressing without having to go through complicated channels or approval processes, tend to show higher patient satisfaction scores in those departments; the idea of a caregiver being “empowered” has a positive effect on how a patient perceives the care they are receiving and the overall experience.
This type of information is extremely valuable to healthcare organizations, as it allows us to focus our improvement efforts on those areas of employee satisfaction that may have the greatest impact on patient satisfaction. This type of research can be performed on a set of employee satisfaction data and patient satisfaction data from a similar timeframe from the same departments; the survey data does not have to necessarily be administered by the same survey vendor.
The Jackson Group has produced this type of analysis for several of its clients in recent months, with those organizations receiving very specific and actionable areas to focus employee satisfaction improvements. If your organization is interested in having The Jackson Group conduct such an analysis on your data, please contact us by phone at 800-554-0373 or by email at info@thejacksongroup.com.
